A major fight took place ten thousand years ago over the magnificent island of Ireland between humans and fairies. The fairy families made the decision to relocate their civilization underground and remain hidden from mankind after realizing they would never be able to triumph. With the exception of the eighth family—the demons—all the fairy families agreed on this.

Until they reassembled and were prepared to fight the humans once again, the demons intended to elevate their little island out of time. But the time magic backfired, sending the island of Hybras hurtling into Limbo, where it has lingered for 10 millennia.

Demons are now being drawn back into the current place and time as the tainted time spell weakens. Naturally, this worries the fairy council, who are keeping an eye on any materializations. The materializations grow unexpected as the spell's decline quickens. It is a mystery even to the fairy scientists where the next monster will appear.

But it's possible. The juvenile criminal genius Artemis Fowl has figured out time equations that no reasonable person should be able to comprehend. But Artemis Fowl isn't your typical person.

So Artemis Fowl is there to greet a bewildered and terrified demon that appears in a Sicilian theater. Sadly, he is not alone in this. Before Artemis can secure the demon, a second, enigmatic group succeeds to solve the time equations and kidnaps him.

The fact that this monster wasn't your typical fairy means that it is disastrous for the fairy people. Since he was the final demon warlock, he held the key to the continued existence of the whole demon species.

In order to prevent the time magic from fully dissolving and the lost demon colony from forcibly returning to Earth, it is up to Artemis and his longtime ally, Captain Holly Short, to locate and rescue the lost demon.
