The bizarre and amazing story of humanity's adventures on Mars, replete with vivid pictures and mind-blowing visions. Currently included in the Voyager Classics library.
The narrative of humanity's many efforts to settle on the red planet is told in The Martian Chronicles. Those were not the first males. When they witnessed their home planet shrink to the size of a fist, the majority of them died from a sickness they named the Great Loneliness. They thought they were born into nothing. Mars did not greet the few survivors with open arms. The shape-shifting Martians saw them as insane natives and appropriately imprisoned them.
However, more and more missiles from Earth came, penetrating the Martians' projected hallucinations. People carried old preconceptions, poisoned aspirations, and wants and fantasies with them. The odd local creatures with their imprisoned flowers and birds of flame quickly took up residence in these.
