It's just another August night. At the southern Norwegian resort with their kids are professor of literature Arne and artist Tove. Across the way in a nearby cabin is their friend Egil, a driver by day. Priest Kathrine is returning home from a seminar; journalist Jostein is out and about; and his assistant nurse wife Turid is working the night shift.
Abruptly, a massive star emerges in the sky above them all. Nobody is certain of the type of phenomenon it is, not even astronomers. Is a star extinguishing itself? So why hasn't anyone already seen it? Is it a new star altogether? Gradually, the curiosity surrounding the news fades, and life continues, albeit with certain modifications as peculiar occurrences start to transpire on the periphery of human existence.
The individuals in the narrative will all experience new challenges in their own lives and have varied perspectives on what is happening during these August days.
