In love, we discover our true selves.
We discover who we are throughout battle.
Paris, 1939
As Antoine Mauriac leaves for the Front, Vianne Mauriac bids him farewell in the sleepy town of Carriveau. She does not think that France will be invaded by the Nazis. However, they do invade: hordes of troops marching in formation, convoys of vehicles and tanks, and aircraft filling the sky with bombs intended to destroy innocent people. Vianne and her daughter are forced to live with the enemy after a German captain seizes their house; otherwise, they risk losing everything. As danger surrounds them and she has no food, money, or hope, she is forced to make difficult decision after difficult decision in order to save her family.
Isabelle, Vianne's sister, is an eighteen-year-old rebel who is driven by the wild passion of youth to find her calling in life. She meets Gaëtan, a partisan who thinks the French can fight the Nazis from inside France, and she falls in love entirely, as only the young can, as thousands of Parisians march into the unknown terrors of war. However, once he betrays her, Isabelle joins the Resistance and never turns back, often putting her life in danger to rescue the lives of others.
