A middle-aged guy goes back to the house he grew up in to attend a funeral. The home he grew up in is now gone, but he finds himself pulled to the farm at the end of the road since it is where he first met Lettie Hempstock and her parents when he was seven years old. Though he hasn't thought about Lettie in decades, the forgotten past suddenly comes rushing back as he sits by the pond behind the dilapidated old farmhouse—a pond she had said was an ocean. Furthermore, the past is too bizarre, terrifying, and hazardous for anybody, much less a little child, to have occurred.
The Ocean at the End of the Lane is a ground-breaking work that is both frightening and delicate at the same time. It is narrated with a remarkable grasp of what it is to be human and demonstrates the ability of tales to expose and protect us from the darkness that exists both within and outside of ourselves.
Comes includes extras including an interview, a reading group guide, and a meeting with Neil Gaiman.
