Failed journalist Leah Stevens, facing a restraining order and the possibility of legal action, has to leave Boston. She meets up with an old friend, Emmy Grey, who just ended a difficult relationship. Emmy suggests that they go to a remote area of Pennsylvania so that Leah may find work as a teacher and the two ladies can start again. However, a lady who has a striking likeness to Leah is attacked by the lake, endangering their fresh start, and days later, Emmy vanishes.

Leah works with the attractive young police officer assigned to the case, Kyle Donovan, since she is determined to locate Emmy. While searching for hints in her friend's life, Leah starts to question whether or not she was ever really acquainted with Emmy. The absence of friends, relatives, and a digital trail leads the authorities to believe that Emmy Grey does not exist. Leah is soon compelled to relive her past—the piece that destroyed her career—as her integrity is in jeopardy. Leah has to know the truth about Emmy Grey in order to rescue herself. Along the way, she needs to face her own fears, figure out who she can really trust, and clean her own record.

Everyone in this little Pennsylvanian town, even Leah, has a secret. When you're too busy concealing your own truths, how do you find the other one?
