Carter Kane has been living out of a suitcase and touring the world with his father, Dr. Julius Kane, an accomplished Egyptologist, since his mother passed away six years ago. However, Sadie, Carter's younger sister, has been living in London with their grandparents while Carter has being homeschooled. Sadie's school mates and opportunity for a "normal" existence are exactly what Carter desires. But Carter spends time with their father, which is exactly what Sadie longs for. The siblings have lived apart for six years and share very little. Right now.
Carter and Sadie are reunited on Christmas Eve when their father takes them to the British Museum, promising to "make things right." However, nothing goes as planned: Carter and Sadie see Julius call out an enigmatic apparition who promptly banishes their father and sets off a violent explosion.
Carter and Sadie soon learn that the gods of ancient Egypt are reviving, and that the most evil of them all, Set, has a sinister plot. They have to set out on a perilous adventure to rescue their father, one that will ultimately lead them closer to the truth about their lineage and its ties to the House of Life, a covert organization that has existed since the time of the pharaohs.
