Locke and his reliable accomplice, Jean, have just avoided certain death when what might have been the biggest theft of their careers go horribly wrong. Jean has, at any rate. But no physiker or alchemist can heal Locke from the fatal poison that is steadily eating away at him. But just when everything is about to end, Locke is presented with a chance by an enigmatic Bondsmage that might either rescue him or bring him to a complete stop.
The factions need a pawn since the magi political elections are about to take place. If Locke accepts the part, magic will be used to remove the poison from his body; nevertheless, the pain will be so great that he could choose to die. Locke is against, but two things make him give up: Jean's pleading and the Bondsmage's reference to Sabetha, a lady from Locke's past. She is his biggest competition right now, the love of his life, and his intellectual and skillful equal.
From the moment Locke laid eyes on Sabetha as a young orphan and would-be robber, he fell in love. However, after a turbulent relationship, Sabetha parted ways. They will now rejoin for a further struggle of wills. Locke has to decide whether to fight Sabetha or court her when he encounters her, since she is his one and only equal in both love and cunning. Their life may rely on the choice they make.
