Russia's Ekaterinburg, July 16, 1918. It has been ten months since revolutionaries ended Nicholas II's monarchy. The town where the Tsar and his family are being kept hostage by the Bolsheviks is being attacked by the White Army tonight. Nicholas is willing to believe in redemption. Rather, the Romanovs are killed in a cold and calculated manner.

Moscow: In the present. Miles Lord, an Atlanta attorney who speaks Russian well and is knowledgeable about the history of the nation, is excited to be in Moscow on the eve of this historic occasion. Following the collapse of communism and a string of unstable administrations, the Russian people have chosen to reinstate the monarchy. A specially created committee will choose the next tsar from among Nicholas II's distant kinsmen, and Miles' task will be to investigate the Tsarist candidate who is supported by a significant faction of Western businesspeople. But after being almost murdered by gunmen in a city square, Miles rapidly realizes that research is the least of his worries.

All of a sudden, Miles is racing across countries as evil minions follow him. His sole concern at initially is the reason for people's pursuit of him. However, after an odd chat with an enigmatic Russian who points Miles in the direction of Rasputin's writings, he is more curious in what really happened to the family of Russia's last monarch.

His sole ally is the sympathetic Russian circus performer Akilina Petrov, and his only source of guidance is a coded message from Rasputin implying that the horrific night of long ago is not the end of the Romanov family's tale and that someone may have even survived the massacre. The prophesy has profound ramifications for Miles's own destiny as well as the future of the emperor and mother Russia.
