Myfanwy Thomas wakes up in a London park surrounded by corpses, all of whom are wearing latex gloves. This is the opening of the letter she is clutching. Myfanwy has no memory of her past existence, so she has to follow the directions she left behind to figure out who she is and find the agents who want to harm her.

She quickly finds out that she is a Rook, a senior member of the Chequy, a covert group that fights the many paranormal forces at play in Britain. She also learns that she has a unique supernatural talent of her own that might be fatal.

Myfanwy comes across a person with four bodies, an aristocratic woman who can enter her dreams, a secret training facility where kids are turned into deadly fighters, and a conspiracy bigger than she could have ever imagined while searching for the member of the Chequy who betrayed her and why.

An ambitious debut from a bright young writer, The Rook is a thrilling thriller that is wonderfully original and filled with weird and interesting characters. It is frequently humorous.
