The stars are brighter under darker skies.
Shahrzad is taken from her devoted husband, the Caliph of Khorasan, in a country on the verge of war. She used to believe Khalid was a monster—a ruthless murderer of spouses, causing unimaginable suffering and heartache—but as she learned more about him, she discovered an incredible guy and an unquestionable love. However, a curse poses a permanent danger to Shazi and Khalid's separation.
She has now been reunited with her family, who have taken sanctuary in the desert. There, a lethal army led by Shazi's childhood love, who is bent on destroying Khalid's dominion, is assembling. Shazi is limited to acting because of her conflicting allegiances to the people she loves. She sets off on her own to finally put an end to the dreadful curse and the building conflict, guided by the power that is growing inside of her. She has to avoid her own adversaries in order to do it, however.
The last chapter of the story, which started with The Wrath and the Dawn, sees Shahrzad sacrifice everything in an attempt to find her way back to her one true love.
