Alaska in 1920 was a harsh place to homestead, and Jack and Mabel, newcomers, found it particularly difficult. Without children, they are slipping apart, with her disintegrating from loneliness and sorrow and him collapsing under the strain of agricultural labour. They construct a kid out of snow during a lighthearted moment during the first snowfall of the season. The snow kid has vanished by dawn, but they manage to get a glimpse of a small girl with blonde hair darting among the woods. It seems that this little youngster, Faina, is a native of the forest. She skims the snow softly, hunts with a red fox at her side, and manages to live by herself in the Alaskan tundra. Jack and Mabel grow to adore this kid as if she were their own daughter as they try to comprehend this youngster who seems to have walked out of a fairy tale. However, nothing is ever as it seems in this stunningly dangerous land, and what they finally discover about Faina will completely change them all.
