But Cara has survived on this Earth. Cara is taken out of the wastelands, recognized as an anomaly and hence an ideal candidate for intergalactic travel. She now lives in a lovely apartment in the affluent, gated community of Wiley City's lower floors. She works—and brazenly flirts—with her seductive but distant handler, Dell, as the two ladies gather data for the Eldridge Institute about off-world activities. Even though she finds it difficult to feel at home in any location, she occasionally travels outside of the city to see her relatives in the wastes. But when one of Cara's eight surviving doppelgängers passes away inexplicably, she finds herself thrust into a strange new world with a long-standing mystery.
