Professor Ray Atlee teaches law at the University of Virginia. At forty-three, he just got divorced and is still dealing with the fallout from the unexpected split. Forrest, his younger brother, is redefining what it means to be the black sheep in the family.
Additionally, he has an elderly father who is extremely ill and lives alone in the Clanton, Mississippi, ancestral house. For four decades, he has loomed large over local politics and law as Judge Atlee, a well-liked and influential figurehead. The judge has retired to the Atlee estate and is no longer sitting on the bench.
As the end draws near, Judge Atlee sends out a summons to his sons to come back to Clanton so they may talk about the specifics of his inheritance. The Judge types it out on his elegant old stationery, noting the day and hour Ray and Forrest are expected in his study.
With reluctance, Ray travels south to his hometown and his upbringing, which he now would rather avoid. However, the family gathering is not held. Ray is the only one who knows the horrific truth that the Judge leaves behind when he passes away too soon.
and maybe someone else.
