Lale Sokolov, a Slovakian Jew, is taken against his will to the Auschwitz-Birkenau death camps in April 1942. His captors assign him to work as a Tätowierer, or tattoo artist, after learning that he is multilingual. His job is to mark his fellow inmates for life.
After being held captive for almost 25 years, Lale observes horrifying crimes and savagery as well as amazing courage and kindness. He utilises his position of luxury and personal risk to trade money and jewellery from slain Jews for food to keep his fellow inmates alive.
A young lady who is terrified and waiting in line to get the number 34902 tattooed on her arm is comforted by Lale, prisoner 32407, one July 1942. During their first meeting, Lale makes a promise to marry Gita if he survives the camp.
The Tattooist of Auschwitz is a vivid, terrifying, and ultimately hopeful reconstruction of Lale Sokolov's experiences as the man who inked one of the most powerful symbols of the Holocaust on the arms of thousands of prisoners. It also serves as a monument to the persistence of love and humanity in the face of the most dreadful circumstances.
