The Three-Body Problem

A clandestine military experiment transmits messages into space in an attempt to make contact with extraterrestrials against the background of China's Cultural Revolution. The signal is picked up by an impending extraterrestrial civilization that makes preparations to attack Earth. As this is going on, many groups on Earth begin to organize, with the intention of either fighting the alien invasion or welcoming the superior aliens and assisting them in taking over a society that is seen as corrupt.
