Justin Cronin created a memorable universe in his highly acclaimed and globally successful book The Passage, which was the result of a government experiment gone tragically wrong. Now, as The Twelve propels the epic tale ahead, its breadth expands and its intensity grows.

Three strangers negotiate the mayhem as the man-made apocalypse takes place in the present. Expectant mother Lila, a doctor, is so devastated by the spread of diseases and violence that she keeps planning for the birth of her child even as society collapses around her. Kittridge, well known as 'Last Stand in Denver', was forced to leave his stronghold and is now travelling while avoiding the infected. He is armed but by himself and is aware that a tank of petrol can only take him so far. April, a teenager, is struggling to keep her younger brother safe in a world gone topsy-turvy. These three will discover that even on the darkest of nights, there is hope since they have not been completely abandoned.

Amy and the others continue to strive for humanity's rescue a century later, not realising that the laws have changed. The adversary has changed, and a terrifying new order has emerged with an even more terrifying vision of the future than the apocalypse of humanity.
