Say hello to Harold Fry, who just retired. He and his wife, Maureen, reside in a little English hamlet. She seemed to be annoyed by almost everything he does, even the way he butters his bread. Nothing sets one day apart from the next. Then one morning the mail comes, and amid the pile of everyday items there is a letter written in a weak handwriting to Harold from a lady he hasn't seen or spoken to in twenty years. Queenie Hennessy is writing to say farewell from hospice.
Harold quickly responds in writing and walks to the corner mailbox, leaving Maureen to finish her tasks. Harold then has a fortuitous meeting that, as is often the case with the finest fiction, persuades him that he must personally deliver his message to Queenie. And so the improbable journey starts. Harold Fry thinks Queenie Hennessey will survive as long as he walks, so he is resolved to walk the six hundred miles from Kingsbridge to the hospice in Berwick-upon-Tweed.
Harold sets off on his frantic hunt across the countryside, still wearing his light coat and yachting shoes. He encounters many characters throughout the journey, each of whom awakens his long-dormant spirit and sense of potential. Recollections of his first dance with Maureen, his wedding day, and his happiness as a parent flood back, helping him to make peace with the losses and the regrets. Maureen, on the other hand, is missing Harold for the first time in a long time.
And there's still the unresolved matter with Queenie Hennessy.
