It is possible to achieve the impossible. The man known as the Lord Ruler, who cruelly governed the globe for a millennium and claimed to be god incarnate, has fallen. Unfortunately, the hero who orchestrated that victory, Kelsier, is now dead, leaving his young protégé Vin—a former street kid who is now the most powerful Mistborn in the land—and the idealistic young nobleman she loves to take on the enormous burden of creating a new world.
She feels very uneasy about the fact that a new religion is elevating her as Kelsier's apprentice and the Lord Ruler's killer. Even more concerning is the fact that after the death of the Lord Ruler, the mists have started acting oddly and seem to be home to a weird vaporous thing that haunts her.
Vin's Mistborn talents may remain sharp by stopping assassins, but that's the least of her worries. Vin and the other members of Kelsier's crew, who lead the revolution, have to pick up a whole new set of political and practical abilities to assist Luthadel, the biggest city of the old empire, operate itself. With three armies, one of which is made up of fierce giants, competing for control of the city and no trace of the Lord Ruler's secret supply of atium—the rarest and most potent allomantic metal—things won't be getting any easier.
An old tale seems to provide some hope as the siege of Luthadel intensifies. Even if the Well of Ascension is genuine, no one is aware of its location or the kind of power it grants.
