Even though the Hierarchy, or Catenan Republic, now controls the planet, they are not all-knowing.

I introduce myself as Vis Telimus. I tell them that three years ago, a sad event left me an orphan, and that entrance into their most prestigious school is only due to good fortune. I assure them that after I graduate, just like millions of other people have done before me, I would gladly join the rest of civilized society in letting my will, my strength, and my drive—what they call would—be sapped away and added to the power of those above me. As everything must do in the end.

They believe me when I tell them I belong.

In actuality, though, I was dispatched to the Academy in order to gather information. to find a murder. to look for a weapon from antiquity. to unearth information that could split the Republic.

And that the empire that put my family to death will never, ever receive my Will.

I will still need to advance through the Academy's ranks in order to survive, though. I'll have to put on a happy face, make friends, and act like I belong in order to succeed. Because if I can't, then I won't be useful to those who know my true name and want to dominate me.

And the Hierarchy is going to kill me if they discover who I really am.
