Despite only being separated by a year, Stella and Ellie Steckler's relationship is hampered by their dissimilar personalities. Stella is private, focused, and unwavering in her beliefs. Her life is cross-country running, and she will stop at nothing to become the best. Although Ellie, her sister, is also a gifted runner, she also enjoys herself. She is pals with people. She attends social events. Her life is not focused on the race.

One thing unites the sisters, though: Mila Keene, the new girl. The arrival of Mila in the town upends the lives of both Stecklers. Ellie and Stella initially saw Mila as a threat because she was the top runner on her team back home. However, Ellie soon finds herself pulled to her amiable, endearing disposition. Ellie has been searching for a buddy since her best friend moved away and her first lover deceived her. She even tells Mila her darkest secret in a moment of weakness. Stella, on the other hand, finds herself observing the similarities between Mila and herself. Stella can finally connect with Mila because she is a strong and intelligent person. Stella turns into the person she said she would never be as they get closer: preoccupied.
