Cushla lives in a tranquil tiny village close to Belfast with her mother, despite the constant tales of violence in the area. She works as a Catholic school teacher during the day and fills in at her family's bar at night. She meets Michael Agnew there, a prominent barrister known for his work representing IRA members. Cushla allows herself to be captivated by Michael and his affluent environment, against her better judgment—not only is he Protestant, but he's also older and married—and an affair begins. Then a student's father is brutally abused, starting a domino effect that will endanger everything and everyone that Cushla is most concerned about safeguarding.
