The release date for the English version of 'War and Peace' by
Leo Tolstoy is Jun 1998. If you enjoy this novel, it is available for buy as a paperback from Barnes & Noble or Indigo, as an ebook on the Amazon Kindle store, or as an audiobook on Audible.
Tolstoy saw the Russian war against Napoleon as a global tragedy involving all of humanity.
The main plot of War and Peace centers on Napoleon's invasion of Russia in 1812 and centers on three of the most well-known literary figures: Prince Andrei Bolkonsky, who leaves his family to fight against Napoleon; Pierre Bezukhov, the illegitimate son of a count who is fighting for his inheritance and seeking spiritual fulfillment; and Natasha Rostov, the stunning young daughter of a nobleman who piques the interest of both men.
Tolstoy masterfully follows individuals from a variety of backgrounds—peasants and nobles, citizens and soldiers—as they grapple with issues particular to their time, place in history, and culture as Napoleon's army advances. Furthermore, as the story goes on, these people grow beyond their particularity to become some of the most poignant and relatable characters in all of literature.
This translation, which is available here in a new one volume edition with an introduction by Henry Gifford and Tolstoy's significant essay "Some Words about War and Peace," was approved by the author personally.
