After becoming an orphan and finding himself on the streets, Jacob Jankowski boards a passing train and discovers a world full of oddballs, misfits, and drifters—a poor-quality circus trying to make ends meet while performing one-night stands in town after interminable town during the Great Depression. Jacob, a veterinary student who is on the verge of graduating, is tasked with taking care of the menagerie at the circus. There he meets August, the flamboyant but deranged animal trainer, and Marlena, the stunning young star of the equestrian show. Additionally, he encounters Rosie, an elephant who at first seems untrainable but who eventually opens up to him.
Water for Elephants is beautifully written and has a fantastic feeling of place and time. In a world where even love is a luxury that few can afford, it depicts the tale of a love between two people that triumphs against overwhelming circumstances.
