Bob Johansson is eager to start living a more relaxed life after selling his software firm. There are things to do, places to see, and films and books to read. Thus, it seems a bit unjust that he should die while crossing the street.

A century later, Bob awakens to discover that the state now owns him and that corpsicles have been ruled to have no rights. He is intended to serve as the commanding artificial intelligence (AI) in an interplanetary spacecraft searching for livable planets after being uploaded into computer hardware. The initial claim to whole planets is at stake, no less. They'll turn him off and try again with someone else if he rejects the honour. He becomes a prime target if he accepts. At least three additional nations are using deceitful tactics to attempt to launch their own probes before the others.

Bob is travelling as fast as can away from Earth and into space, where he is safest. Or so he believes. Because trespassers enrage them much, and the cosmos is full with nasty people.
