A fresh piece of suspenseful philosophy.

Penny is an artist who has spent decades in the same flat, surrounded by mementos and relics from her lengthy life. She accepts the routine tasks of aging, at least until things start to go wrong. Unbeknownst to her, arrangements had been made years before to her longtime partner's death for a bed at a special long-term care facility, where Penny ends up after one too many "incidents."

At first everything seems fine: you're with your friends, having conversations, eating, sleeping, and admiring the lovely trees that around your home. She even starts painting again. But as the days go longer and longer, Penny begins to lose her sense of time and her position in the world due to a rising feeling of unease and mistrust. Is she giving in to the subtle devastation that comes with becoming older, or is she a willing accomplice in something far more sinister?

Iain Reid's genre-defying third book, written in simple, mesmerizing English, is at once empathetic and spooky as it tackles themes of relationships, creativity, productivity, conformity, and what it means to grow old.
