A county project that transfers pupils from the town's mostly Black east side to its primarily white west high schools has the Piedmont community in North Carolina inconsolable. For two pupils, Gee and Noelle, the integration starts a series of events that over the following twenty years would unexpectedly bind their two families together.

Gee's tough, ambitious mother Jade is on one side of the integration argument. Following a devastating loss, she is committed to provide her son with the resources he will need to thrive in America as a young Black guy who is sensitive and nervous. The strong-willed mother of Noelle, Lacey May, is a white lady who refuses to accept her half-Latina children as anything other than white. Since she was unable to shield herself from the influence of their endearing but untrustworthy father, Robbie, she works to safeguard them.

Gee and Noelle's paths cross when they enroll in the play designed to heal the rift between new and old pupils. Their two families, who at first glance seem to be unconnected, start to weave intricate webs of disarray that will influence how they live as adults. And each of their moms, who is motivated to provide her kid a better life, will make decisions that will follow them for decades.

What's Mine and Yours is a vast, colorful tapestry that spans the years, from the North Carolina foothills to Atlanta, Los Angeles, and Paris, as love is created and lost, and the past is never too far behind. It delves into the peculiar creature that is every family, examining what causes families to fall apart and how they reunite.
