Who Fears Death

A post-apocalyptic African book is the first venture into supernatural fiction by an award-winning literary novelist.

Genocide afflicts a portion of far future Africa, after the nuclear holocaust. The Nuru, the aggressors, have made the decision to eradicate the Okeke in accordance with the Great Book. However, the only survivor of a massacred Okeke tribe is viciously sexually assaulted, and she escapes, venturing farther into the desert. She gives birth to a newborn girl who has sand-colored skin and hair, and she immediately recognizes that her daughter is unique. In an old African language, her daughter's name is Onyesonwu, which translates to "Who Fears Death?"

Raised by an enigmatic and traditional shaman, Onyesonwu learns that stopping her people's annihilation is her mystical destiny. She will have to confront nature, customs, history, genuine love, cultural spiritual secrets, and ultimately death itself on her quest to fulfill her destiny.
