Nina Whitson and Meredith are as unlike as sisters can be. While one pursued her ambition of becoming a well-known photographer, the other remained at home to raise her kids and oversee the family orchard. However, Meredith and Nina find themselves reunited with their chilly, judgmental mother Anya, who continues to provide her children with little consolation, as their adored father becomes sick. All they had in common as kids was the Russian fairy tale Anya would sometimes tell the girls at night. Their father begs the ladies in his life to make a commitment to him on his deathbed: the fairy tale shall be read one final time—all the way to the very end. This marks the start of an unexpected adventure uncovering the truth about Anya's existence over fifty years ago in war-torn Leningrad. After hearing the unique, horrific tale of their mother's life, which alternates between the past and the present, Meredith and Nina will discover a truth so horrible and horrifying that it will upend their family's fundamental foundation and alter their perception of themselves.
