Morgan Kincaid's life abruptly transforms into something else entirely. A mother asks her to take her baby and puts it in her arms as she is making her way home from work. The devastated mother jumps in front of an approaching train before Morgan can save her.

Morgan has never seen this mother before, and she finds it incomprehensible that someone would give up their child and commit suicide. She is also perplexed as to how the woman recognized her name.

Morgan is brought in by the police to be questioned. She finds out quickly that the woman who leaped was Nicole Markham, the well-known CEO of the sports clothing company Breathe. She also finds out that her account of events is not supported by any witnesses, which implies she has just been named as a murder suspect.

In a desperate attempt to establish her innocence, Morgan goes back over Nicole's final moments. Was Nicole in danger, or was she just a new mother dealing with paranoia? Morgan becomes aware that she could be in danger when odd things begin to happen to her.
