There were moments when he wanted it would pursue him, this monster he did not want to be. However, it never moved. It just stood there. Awaited his arrival at the scene. In Waymer, Palmer LaRue's hometown, a boy's tenth birthday is the most significant occasion in his life. It's the day a boy gets set to take on the role of wringer at the yearly Family Fest. It's both a custom and an honor.

However, Palmer fears becoming 10 years old rather than looking forward to it. Palmer does not want to be a wringer, despite the fact that he is unable to say this to anybody. But just as he cannot halt tradition, he cannot stop himself from becoming older.

Palmer then realizes that more than anything else, the appearance of a guest on his windowsill one day indicates that his time is running out. He has to find a way to overcome his fear and defend his convictions.
