Meg Corbyn has a talent that seems more like a curse: when her flesh is sliced, she can see the future because she is a cassandra sangue, or blood prophet. Meg's Controller enslaves her in order to fully control her visions. However, Meg's lone safe haven after making her escape is the Lakeside Courtyard, an area of commerce run by the Others.

Simon Wolfgard, a shape-shifter, is hesitant to employ the stranger who applies for the Human Liaison position. She doesn't smell like human prey, therefore he can tell she's hiding something. But a greater feeling pushes him to assign the task to Meg. He will also need to choose if Meg is worth the inevitable conflict that will erupt between humans and the Others after learning the truth about her and that the government is after her.
