Julie, 17, knows exactly what she wants out of life: she wants to move out of her tiny town with her boyfriend Sam, go to college in a big city, and spend a summer in Japan. Sam passes away, however. Then everything is altered.
Julie, devastated, discards his belongings, misses his burial, and makes every effort to forget him and the awful manner he passed away. However, a note Sam wrote in her yearbook brings back memories. Julie calls Sam's mobile phone just to check his voicemail because she is desperate to hear his voice one more time.
Sam answers the phone.
By some miracle, Julie has been granted one more opportunity to say farewell. The link is only transitory. However, she falls in love with Sam all over again when she hears his voice, and it is harder to say goodbye to him with every call. But Julie finds it difficult to keep her unearthly conversations with Sam a secret—especially once she sees the pain Sam's family is going through. Julie is forced to choose between telling Sam the truth about her calls with him and jeopardising their relationship by losing him permanently as she cannot watch helplessly while their shared loved ones suffer.
