Zlata's Diary: A Child's Life in Wartime Sarajevo

Zlata's Diary was likened to The Diary of Anne Frank because of its vivid voice and the dismal reality of the world it depicts. It became an international success when it was initially released at the height of the Bosnian War. It starts out as a day-to-day account of the life of an ordinary eleven-year-old girl, busy with birthday celebrations and piano lessons. Zlata Filipovic, however, witnesses food shortages, friend deaths, and learns to wait out bombardments in a neighbor's basement as war engulfs Sarajevo. Nevertheless, she never wavers in her bravery and observation. The end product is a book that may inspire and educate readers on a whole other level.
